To all pet owners: I strongly urge you to avoid corporate veterinary chains and support independent vets while they still exist. Grove Lodge is owned by IVC Evidensia, a large equity-backed group whose business model appears to prioritise shareholder profit over animal wellbeing. For us and our young cat, this translated into being ushered toward maximum intervention at astronomical cost. IVC Evidensia’s senior leadership team isn’t made up of veterinarians. The Chief Executive previously ran supermarket and pharmacy chains, and the Chief Operating Officer came from telecoms and car-maintenance retail. Their expertise lies in maximising customer throughput and profit margins, not in animal care. In our case, we were charged £2,000 for the hospitalisation of our young, otherwise healthy cat for a non-severe gastrointestinal upset, having been led to believe that failing to do so could risk his life. Additionally, his IV line became dislodged halfway through the night and was never replaced, undermining the justification for his treatment. We felt exploited during a highly emotional time – pushed into unnecessary escalation instead of being offered a sensible, stepwise treatment plan. This was not necessary. Our cat was poorly, but not dying. Our complaint was rerouted to IVC Evidensia’s head office, where we were offered a token 10% refund for “unadministered fluids” but no accountability or acknowledgement that a £2,000 bill was excessive. Our lad is now back with us and has recovered from his traumatic experience with home love and care. We most certainly will not be returning to Grove Lodge. If you value transparency, compassion, and proportionate care, support an independent vet who still puts animals before profit.
